In the seventh season premiere Captain Benjamin Sisko
headed to Earth to try and find a way to contact the prophets. After
three months, a vision came to Sisko when his ball rolled off the piano.
In this vision he found a strange woman buried in the sand in the alien
desert of Tyree. Captain Sisko later found out that the woman was
his biological mother and that she left his father after Sisko's first
birthday. Sisko also uncovered that his real mother was some how
linked to the Orb of the Emissary, a Bajoran orb that no one knew about.
Through his difficult times, when he was trying to figure out what the
Orb of the Emissary had to do with his biological mother, Sisko wished
that Dax (who died in the previous episode (6th season finale) "Tears of
the Prophets") was with him to help him sort things out. Sisko's
wish would come true at the end of the episode when, just before embarking
on their Journey to Tyree, Sisko, Jake and his father meet Ezri Dax, the
new host to the Dax symbiont.
Meanwhile, Worf was having difficulties dealing
with Jadzia's death, because she did not die in battle and never made it
to Sto-vo-kor (Klingon heaven). Worf, O'Brien, Bashir, and Quark
were all preparing to embark on a dangerous mission with General Martok.
They would fight a battle in the name of Jadzia because only then could
she get into Sto-vo-kor. Colonel Kira Nerys (promoted to colonel
just after the 6th season ended) was forced to deal with Romulans who wished
to set up a hospital complex on Bajor's forth moon. However the Bajoran
government asked them to leave after the Romulans heavily fortified the
hospital.
This episode was rather slow for a season premiere.
There was relatively no action. However, I believe this episode was
necessary to set the stage for the seventh season. With the Pah Wraiths
and the Prophets locked in an eternal struggle for power in the wormhole,
the writers had to come up with a way to unlock the wormhole, and this
episode paved the way for Sisko to find the Orb of the Emissary.
It also helped Worf deal with the loss of Jadzia. And briefly (very
briefly) introduced the new character, Ezri Dax. I did enjoy this
episode, though not as much as its continuation "Shadows and Symbols",
I believe that this episode was an important part of this season and set
the stage quite nicely for the following episode.
